What is UNARC? UNARC stands for UN Antiracism Coalition. We are a UN facing civil society coalition composed of over 120 members. We exist to maximize the impact of the “George Floyd Resolution” (HRC resolution 47/21) and to support cross-regional civil society coordination and advocacy.  The Coalition seeks to facilitate access and engagement of directly impacted communities and grassroots groups at the UN and to leverage the work of the EMLER mechanism (International Independent Expert Mechanism to Advance Racial Justice and Equality in the Context of Law Enforcement) and the OHCHR to support national level advocacy. Find out more about how the coalition was created HERE

Who is in UNARC?  We are composed of members from different parts of the world including directly impacted people, their organizations, representatives of social movements, local organizations/collectives, national, regional and international NGOs and international experts. Find out more about our membership HERE

What is the work of UNARC? Our work focuses on pushing for accountability at the United Nations for systemic racism and police violence against Africans and people of African descent.  Specifically, we focus on three UN spaces: the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC), the above mentioned UN investigative mechanism focusing on violence in law enforcement towards Africans and Afrodescendants (EMLER), and the section of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) focusing on antiracism and police violence. The coalition was instrumental in the creation of the EMLER mechanism that is specific and unique within the UN with a mandate to solely focus on systemic racism and police violence against Africans and people of African descent.

Why do we exist? We operate under the assumption that working in coalition and collectively using the United Nations as a tool to drive change is a way to positively affect the realities of Africans and Afrodescendants on the ground in terms of safety, security, and access to justice.

Why should you support UNARC? In these three operational years we have had many accomplishments  (see some examples here 2022, 2023 and 2024 list of accomplishments) in which we worked hard to dismantle oppressive structures for Black people across the globe. We intend to continue to make the United Nations an accessible space for civil society and continue to advocate in international spaces pushing for State accountability for violence, excessive use of force and other human rights violations in the context of law enforcement towards Africans and people of African descent. To do this we need your help!

What would the money be used for? the money you donate today will be used for supporting member campaigns, side events, interpretation for our coalition meetings (as we belive in language justice and in order to build an international movement we need to be able to communicate), supporting directly impacted people locally during the country visits of the UN investigative mechanism focusing on violence in law enforcement towards Africans and Afrodescendants, and much more! You can keep up to date with all of our activities in our social media accounts (IG, FB, X), our website.
