For more than two decades, SunServe’s mental health program was shaped by the work of Dr. James “Jim” Lopresti.

Arriving in South Florida in 2002, Jim was tasked with building the organization’s clinical foundation. He created programs, established standards, supervised clinicians, and mentored generations of counselors, helping transform SunServe into a trusted provider of LGBTQ+-affirming mental health care. Nearly every clinician who trained at SunServe during those years was influenced by Jim’s guidance — either directly or through the practices and structure he put in place.

His focus never wavered: people who had been excluded from traditional systems deserved competent, respectful care. Thousands found stability and support through programs he helped create.

Though he taught nationwide and contributed to the broader behavioral health system, SunServe remained the center of his daily work and lasting impact. In 2025, he received Mental Health America of Southeast Florida’s EPIC Award, recognizing a career devoted to building reliable, ethical, and affirming care.

This gathering honors not only Jim’s life, but the ongoing work that continues because of him — in every session, every clinician trained, and every person who walks through SunServe’s doors seeking help.
