Decolonizing the Music Room began in 2019 as a website and facebook group using and dialogue research to help educators develop racially equitable practices guided by knowledge and experiences of Black, Brown, Indigenous, and Asian voices that are marginalized or erased within traditional music education and training.
As our reputation grew, we expanded into developing and presenting trainings to educators, music students, music therapists, music making communities, and other professionals. DTMR received 501(c)(3) nonprofit status in 2020 and soon after launched its first program, the Fort Worth African American Roots Music Festival. DTMR has continued presenting and growing its free online content while creating more community programming featuring expert artists, educators, and scholars.
