"Nouveau" is French for "new" and it signifies a tidal shift in the Jazz community that happens around the 1960's. The cultural revolution in America signified a change and deviation from the societal norms of the times, and America's only unique art form, Jazz, followed suit. No longer simply a dance band, or a singer's backing group, Jazz musicians began to explore what it meant to explore new ways of performing, let the music speak for itself. They explored what their instruments could do, played with new rhythmic styles, and redefined the genre.
