Roger has been incarcerated for nearly 10 years. His daughter is 11 now, but she was just a baby when he went to prison. “The first time I saw her, I cried,” Roger remembers. “It gave me a lot of joy.”
He says he’s missed nearly everything since then — graduations, school mornings, bedtime tuck-ins, and all the small moments in between. One of his favorite memories is watching her take her very first steps. “She was more shocked than me,” he laughs. “She fell a lot too, but it meant a whole lot.”
That’s why the Father-Daughter Dance feels so significant. “It’s a chance for her to see me in a different setting, dressed up, not just in jeans and a shirt,” Roger says. His daughter loves to dance, often trying to teach him moves he can’t quite keep up with. “At the dance, we’ll be able to take our time. She can teach me how to dance. I just want her to know I love her — and never let one thing define who you are.”
