El Otro Regalo (translated “the other gift”) did not originally come to us with that name. He was believed to be “Pirate’s Deputy” at the time and, in reality, the two horses not only had a striking resemblance to each other, but their tattoo numbers are also very close. It was not until later that someone reached out with the whereabouts of the real Pirate’s Deputy, and we did a DNA test to determine his identity. His real identity is a horse that has never raced, but was definitely trained to do so. The scar on his leg is a mystery, and we can only wonder why someone would dump a horse with his amazing personality and willingness in a kill pen. Barney lives in sanctuary now with Lake Fork Stables and has become a fantastic lesson horse. He truly is a gift to our program.
