End Solitary NC

Solitary confinement is a human rights crisis happening behind prison walls in North Carolina. Every day, people - many with mental health disabilities, substance use disorder, or other serious conditions - are locked alone in small concrete cells for 22 to 24 hours a day. Some are children. Some are pregnant. Some remain in isolation for months, even years.

This cruel practice causes permanent psychological harm, fuels suicide, and disproportionately impacts people with disabilities and people of color.

Disability Rights North Carolina (DRNC) launched the End Solitary NC campaign to end this inhumane practice. Led by Dr. Craig Waleed, who brings lived experience with solitary confinement, this project builds public awareness and powerful coalitions, including formerly incarcerated people, disability and reentry advocates, faith leaders, educators, and grassroots organizers. Together, we are demanding change.

This work is gaining momentum, but it’s at risk.

Without renewed funding, DRNC’s End Solitary NC campaign will end on December 31.

We cannot allow that to happen. Your support will keep this movement alive and growing. Together, we can fight for a future without torture in North Carolina prisons.
