The Fiji Islands are known for their pristine beaches and unmatched hospitality, but for remote communities like Vorovoro Island, paradise comes with challenges. For centuries, the people of Vorovoro have lived on their ancestral land, protecting their way of life. Yet, access to vital resources like healthcare, materials, and sustainable income remains a daily struggle. Allowing their land to be use for traditional resort tourism is tempting, but this comes at quite a cost.

The community is taking bold steps to ensure their future. They’re developing The Vorovoro Cultural Centre, a Fijian owed and operated space where visitors from around the world and within Fiji can experience and celebrate endangered Fijian culture and traditions. Through grassroots, small-scale, education based tourism, they’re creating opportunities to generate income while safeguarding their land and culture for future generations.

But their connection to the outside world—and the success of this endeavor—depends on reliable boat transportation.

THE NEED:
Their current boat engine, over 20 years old, has reached its final season. Without a new engine, the community’s ability to access food, healthcare, and resources is at risk. A new engine also means the chance to continue to welcome visitors who provide vital income and support for the Cultural Centre.

In Fiji, boat engines are not just a means of transportation; they are lifelines. But like cars on the mainland, they come at a high cost, especially for subsistence farming and fishing communities.
