The Hermosa Beach Friends of the Library (HBFoL) is raising $2,500 to expand on a 44-year legacy and grow our support for the LA County Bookmark Contest in Hermosa Beach!

Who is HBFoL?

The Hermosa Beach Friends of the Library (HBFoL) has served Hermosa Beach for 65 years. Our 501(c)(3) public charity is led by a passionate group dedicated to fostering a love of reading and making our library resources accessible to all.

Program Summary

For 44 years, the LA County Bookmark Contest has been a beacon of creativity and literacy, celebrating the imaginative spirit of young readers from local schools, honoring their artistic talents with a platform to create bookmark designs as unique as their love for reading. HBFoL has proudly supported this program for decades; in 2024, we are taking a bold step forward to expand this cherished contest.

Activities

Starting in 2024, we are expanding our awards for the four distinguished Hermosa Beach winners, representing K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12 grade ranges. We will expand the printing and distribution of bookmarks across the community, celebrating these students’ work while promoting a broader love of reading. We will reach out to community partners to organize workshops, foster participation, and make art and literacy a communal celebration.

Impact

By investing in the arts, reading, and literacy among Hermosa Beach students, the Bookmark Contest stands as a testament to the community's commitment to fostering a lifelong love for learning. This initiative builds upon LA County's longstanding support for nurturing young talents and aims to enhance enthusiasm for reading and literacy through this engaging competition.

Partners

Our team will partner with local artists and galleries to host events, gatherings, and celebrations before, during, and after the contest period to increase engagement among Hermosa Beach students and maximize community interest in the program.
