David has been incarcerated for seven years. He’s a father of six daughters — his oldest is 18, and his youngest three are 13, 11, and 10. While he’s seen his older girls during his incarceration, he hasn’t seen his youngest daughters since they were babies. “It’s going to mean the world to me,” David says. “I ain’t seen them since they was little, so it don’t mean a lot.”
The Father-Daughter Dance represents the chance to make a memory that has been missing for so long. “It’s going to be a memory I’ll always hold on to,” he says. For David, even wearing a suit for the first time carries weight. “I’ll look like a real businessman,” he says with a smile. “It’s going to make me feel important.”
More than anything, David dreams of his daughters being together. “They have different mamas and been separated,” he explains. “I always wanted them to all be together. I never had that chance.”
