A certified 501(c)(3), Unbound Visual Arts (UVA) highlights Greater Boston artists through exhibits and programs that foster community engagement and social change through innovative curatorial strategies.

Since our founding in 2012, we’ve focused on presenting contemporary art that critically engages with our present moment – believing that art has the potential to interrogate social norms, redefine perspectives, and transmit new ideas. When we curate, we seek out art that is meaningful and conceptually-rich – looking for work that pushes us toward new ways of engaging with the world around us. Through exhibits that examine issues such as climate crisis, the structures of gender and race, or identity and belonging, we hope that our program offerings function as educational tools, aesthetic experiments, and prompts for social engagement and action. Along with exhibitions, we organize annual residencies, artist talks, workshops, and performances showcasing local musicians.

Over the years, we’ve been lucky to receive different kinds of support – whether it be students interning at the gallery, neighbors volunteering to run events, institutions awarding grants to fund exhibitions, or artists spreading the word about what we do. This has strengthened our belief in the importance of community-based models of sustainability and has proved that there are a range of methods to support and fund non-profit work.
