Thanks to your support during our record-high Summer intakes, many patients were able to heal, grow, and return home.

With your continued support, we can help even more wildlife make their journey back to the wild this Fall.

Each year, thousands of orphaned, injured, displaced, and vulnerable wild animals arrive at our doors in need of urgent care, expert rehabilitation, and a second chance at life in the wild. From fragile babies still needing around-the-clock feedings to young animals preparing for release, every patient depends on specialized food, medical care, safe habitats, and species-specific enrichment to grow stronger and return home where they belong.

As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to wildlife rescue, rehabilitation, release, and community education, Appalachian Wildlife Refuge® works tirelessly to meet the needs of every wild life in our care. Your generous donation will directly provide life-saving care for wildlife by funding:

Specialized nutrition such as formula, waterfowl starter, fresh produce, fish, and live mealworms for birds, bats, and other patients
Medical and rehabilitation materials such as medications, fluids, wound care supplies, incubator liners, and beeswax used to repair injured turtle shells
Safe habitat supplies and developmental enrichment such as blankets, puppy pads, soft-sided playpens for waterfowl and juvenile bats, native plants, pools so patients can learn to swim, and more

Give today to help rescue vulnerable wildlife, restore local ecosystems, and educate our community about compassionate coexistence with native species. When you support Appalachian Wildlife Refuge, you are not just making a tax-deductible contribution to a worthy cause who is hard at work serving wildlife in need - YOU are saving lives. Your generosity directly translates to survival for thousands of wildlife. You are fighting for those who cannot fight for themselves. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for the incredible impact you have: making a second chance possible for so many who deserve freedom.

From rescuing & rehabilitating wildlife to providing outreach programs fostering conservation, stewardship, and coexistence - we work to mitigate the harms that humans inflict on our shared environment. We are the only facility in western North Carolina licensed to care for all native Appalachian species and one of only two facilities in North Carolina permitted to work with our keystone species: American Black Bears. Since 2018, we have provided second chances by helping more than 150 different species, responding to over 25,000 emergency hotline calls, traveling greater than 200,000 miles for rescues, and treating over 12,000 wildlife. Healthy wildlife populations fill critical niches to promote a balanced ecosystem - which is crucial in sustaining healthy human communities as well.

Upwards of 2,000 wild patients arrive on our doorstep annually in urgent need of care, most of them due to human-caused activities.
Broken and bruised.
Kidnapped and displaced.
Attacked and damaged.
Quiet but strong.
Fighting for their lives.
From vulnerable salamanders and majestic birds of prey to megafauna like black bear cubs, our team works tirelessly to right the wrongs and give a life back to these wild ones.

Countless hours and dedication are poured into these wild ones, nursing them back to health and preparing them to go home: Wild and Free. That is how we see them when they get their second chance, and we need your help giving them this second chance at life back in the wild. This year, make a difference with us for thousands of lives!
