Keeping Seniors Safe, Connected, and Confident in a Digital World

Almost everything has moved online — paying bills, scheduling doctor appointments, video calling family, and accessing vital services. For many older adults on fixed incomes, that shift hasn't come with a guide. It's come with confusion, isolation, and real financial danger.

Cyber Savvy exists to change that.

I started this program because I kept seeing the same thing: smart, capable seniors being targeted by scammers and left behind by technology that was changing faster than anyone was helping them understand it. As a cybersecurity professional and technology advisor serving Western New York since 2012, I knew I could do something about it. So I did.

Through Vision Fellowship Ministries, we provide free digital literacy education and scam prevention training to seniors across Erie and Niagara Counties. Last year, we trained more than 100 seniors through our workshops. Today, 80 more people receive free managed device protection through our program — ongoing coverage they otherwise couldn't afford.

Here's what that looks like in practice.

A woman who attended one of our sessions received a text message claiming that someone had charged $4,000 to her Apple account. It was alarming - designed to be. But before she panicked and called the number in the message, she paused. She talked it over with a friend. And then she remembered something: she has an Android phone and a Windows computer. She doesn't have an Apple account. There was nothing to be charged. It was a scam — and she knew it.

That moment of clarity didn't happen by accident. It happened because she'd been taught what to look for.

We've seen that moment play out again and again — the relief, the confidence, the quiet pride of someone who realized they weren't fooled. That's what this program produces. And it's completely free to every senior we serve.

There are no government grants behind this work. No corporate sponsors. Our $1,500 goal for this year covers workshop materials, outreach costs, and the operational expenses that keep our 180 seniors connected and protected. Every dollar goes directly to the program.
