Houston’s historic Third Ward faces a persistent crisis: more than half of its residents are food insecure, far surpassing national averages. In 2024, the residents at Cuney homes came together to form the first food pantry on a public housing site to address the needs of their neighbors.

This year, communities and nonprofits across the country scrambled to adjust to changing federal legislation federal. With cuts to U.S. Department of Agriculture, changes in SNAP eligibility and growing uncertainty around Summer food programs, children and families are even more at risk for food insecurity.

Despite these challenges, Third Ward residents and organizations are driving innovative, community-led solutions. Their vision includes:

Launching a Food Cooperative and Buying Club to make healthy food affordable for all residents
Expanding Community Gardens to boost fresh produce production and distribution
Restocking the Cuney Homes Food Pantry and providing stipends for summer workers to sustain operations

This film amplifies the voices and stories of Third Ward residents, documents their fight for food justice, and calls for sustainable, community-driven change.
