I cared for my nephew, Daniel Lucas Oxford, who we raised from a young boy until he graduated high school and then moved out on his own. Daniel came to live with us during his cancer treatment. He was misdiagnosed for close to two years and went through several surgeries before they found the cancer and it was at stage IIIC in 2018. I searched and found a doctor willing to do surgery at UCLA, where he traveled and underwent a 14-hour surgery. They couldn’t get all the cancer, but it gave him another year of life with us. Unfortunately he passed away at the young age of 35 and that is when I immersed myself into keeping his name alive and to bring awarenes to colorectal cancer through advocating for colorectal cancer with The Colon Club and FightColorectalCancer.org. I attended my first Call on Congress in March of 2023 to try to help get a research department with the dept. of defense only three months after Daniel passed away and I also participated in Climb for a Cure in August 2023. Since then I have been to Call on Congress this year, 2024, and I became an Ambassador with Fight CRC and now I am a mentor for the new class of ambassadors. I'm doing everything in my power to raise awareness and funding to try to get a much needed research department so we can try to get rid of this awful disease.
