Event

Kapwa Kainan

Join us for an evening of Filipino food and a presentation from special guest speaker Pia Arboleda! Kapwa Kainan means "shared eating." "Kapwa" is the concept of shared identity or togetherness, and "Kainan" means place for eating. Together, this can be understood as a space or event where people come together to share a meal and connect as members of a community. Food is an integral part of a culture's identity as it reflects the history, traditions, geography, and values of the people who cook and consume it. Food can tell us a lot about how a culture has evolved over time, what ingredients and flavors are significant to its cuisine, and what beliefs may be attached to certain dishes. This evening, guests will be treated to Pork Adobo and Miki which will be prepared by President Tony's mother, Cookie, and Treasurer Lei's husband, Chef Mark. Drinks and dessert will also be provided. Recipient of the 2015 UH Regent’s Medal for Excellence in Teaching, Pia Arboleda is Full Professor of Filipino and Philippine Culture, Director of the Center for Philippine Studies, and Chair of the Department of Indo-Pacific Languages and Literatures at University of Hawai'i at Manoa. She holds a Doctor of Arts degree in Language and Literature from De La Salle University Manila. She produces multi-media bilingual materials on folklore and indigenous culture. Pia's presentation is titled Kalusugan at Kalinga - Health and Nurturance. This presentation will discuss indigenous concepts on the soul, mind and body; and the food of our ancestors. It will tap into our food memories and our personal journey into healing through food and a sense of community. Food provides the opportunity for people to bond, share stories, and pass down recipes from generation to generation. With Mental Health Awareness Month in mind, Kawpa Kainan serves to bring people together to share delicious Filipino food and learn about the impacts and importance of cultural identity for our youth.
