The 9th Annual National Flagway Tournament and it's happening in San Francisco! We have partnered with the University of San Francisco Institute for Nonviolence and Social Justice to host Flagway teams coming from all over the U.S.! Support these young people as they change the game with a MATH SPORT!

The Young People’s Project (YPP) creates spaces where high school and college students are trained and become Math Literacy Workers (MLWs) who teach math-based activities to younger children in their neighborhoods and communities. Through an ongoing cycle of learning, practice, teaching, and reflecting to evaluate the effectiveness of their work, YPP MLWs learn the math concepts they need well enough to teach them to others and develop the social and professional competencies they need to facilitate the learning experience for younger peers and to work collaboratively while doing so.

The Flagway game includes factoring and categorizing numbers based on the Mobius function. This introduces core math concepts: identifying and factoring prime and composite numbers, combinations, exponents, algebraic substitution and the mathematical concept of function. By combining these mathematical elements with physical activity, the students have tons of fun while learning.

Participating in Flagway bolsters students’ skills and how they view themselves. Flagway participants, both MLWs and the students they work with, see themselves as mathematicians. Research shows that identity, engagement, and motivation are key elements of students’ success.
