California has lots of food deserts, areas that do not have a full service grocery store within a 1 mile radius. Instead, many of these neighborhoods have convenience stores full of unhealthy options – sugary drinks, salty snacks, fatty foods, tobacco, and alcohol. The community health outcomes for children, adults, and seniors tell a predictable story. Limited access to healthy, nutrient dense foods, increases the risk for chronic diseases, including mental health challenges.

Food Indy, a non-profit organization, founded in 2021 is focused on food independence, sustainable living, health, and mental wellness and dedicated to providing public health education, resources, and support for individuals, families, seniors, and communities to take more ownership of their food and foodways, improve local food access, and to ultimately decrease risk for disease.
