Food is Medicine Program

With the recent pause on the SNAP program, many of our community members are facing increased food insecurity. To address this urgent need, our Food is Medicine Program takes a collaborative approach that works with our local farm community and neighborhood organizations to minimize the gaps that leave many families without access to food while also focusing on health and nutrition.

Our program provides fresh produce from our local farms and community donations along with grocery staples in order to support the most vulneralbe in our community.  We also offer education, resources, and community-building programming along with nutritious food to help people on thier path to healthy habits. Too often emergency food assistnace simply focuses on calories and volumes of food. This very food can also be the issue creating serious health challenges for those struggling with diabetes and heart disease. We want to ensure food quality and nutrition so that people can get the food they need to change thier lives. Our program also ensures that the dollars we spend are reinvested locally, with our local farmers and community partners so we keep building resilience. With your support we get a win for food security, a win for our local food economy, and a win for community health!

At Pleasant Street Civil Rights & Cultural Arts Center, we help people in Alachua County overcome the problems that make it hard for them to be healthy and happy. We work with other groups to help people learn new skills, stand up for their rights, and celebrate their culture. We believe that everyone deserves a fair chance to live a good life.
