Holiday Season - Give Food Security

In LA County, Long Beach has the highest percentage of low-income households and more than 31% of residents are experiencing food insecurity (2023 CA Food Banks census).  Additionally, the families who receive CalFresh to purchase groceries suffered a reduction in food assistance amounts by up to 40% while continuing to be hit with soaring inflation. 

Long Beach families are often faced with not having enough to eat, missing meals, and being forced to choose between buying food or paying for other essential living expenses. At least 1 in 4 families suffers from food insecurity which is associated with poor/chronic health status, developmental risks, mental health problems, and poor educational outcomes (Food Research & Action Center.

Help Me Help You (HMHY) is dedicated to improving the lives of residents in need by providing services to over 63,000 residents that reduce hunger and poverty, improve nutrition and health, boost family economic security, and ultimately motivate and transition lives from poverty to self-sufficiency. These services include free weekly nutritious groceries via 11 community food pantries; Long Beach Food Pantry Delivery (servicing seniors & the disabled); health and financial education; community outreach; and free enrollment assistance for CalFresh, General Relief, and MediCal; as well as referrals to housing services, and more. Eight of our food pantries are located at Long Beach Unified Schools, serving areas with the highest poverty rates. HMHY focuses on helping our most vulnerable including seniors; children and families; single mothers; disabled individuals; veterans; and the homeless.
