Fatu has been smoking and selling fish on the coast of Sinoe County since she was nineteen years old. She knows the sea. She knows the fish. She knows how to run a business because she has been running one since before anyone thought to teach her.

But Fatu has never had a bank account. She has never accessed a formal loan. She has never received training on cold storage or food safety, things that would let her sell her fish further, for more, and for longer. She operates informally, and that invisibility has cost her thousands.

Liberia's 570-kilometer coastline is one of its greatest untapped resources. Fish provides more than 60% of the animal protein Liberians consume. Yet the sector loses 20-30% of its catch to post-harvest waste, and the women at the heart of it remain shut out of the systems that could help them grow.
