Thanks to funding provided by the University of Georgia and the Birkley Heynen Environmental Foundation, Shell to Shore has provided immersive conservation education experiences for 17 college students.

We're working to raise another $5,000 by the end of the year to deepen our investment in Shell to Shore's internship program, enough to underwrite one intern for a full semester. This experience provides hands-on training in conservation, shell recycling, and coastal restoration, helping grow the next generation of environmental leaders. Oysters aren’t just delicious—they’re overachievers. They’re a natural resource, a keystone species, and full-on ecosystem engineers. They filter water, regenerate themselves, and generally do more for the planet than most of us before our morning coffee.

At Shell to Shore, we make sure your oysters don’t die in vain. After you slurp 'em, our restaurant partners collect the shells from your plate, then we haul them to a farm outside Athens, and let them chill for six months. Once they’re cured, they head to the coast—back where they belong.

Why? Because when oyster shells are returned to the shore, they become the foundation for new oyster reefs, living shorelines, and coastal resilience projects. We’re basically turning your dinner scraps into habitat, water filtration systems, and storm buffers. No big deal.

Along the way, we’re connecting chefs to oyster farmers, eaters to ecosystems, and Georgians to the big blue picture. And while our main goal is shell recycling and restoration, we’re also here to hype sustainably farmed oysters and champion creative, circular ways to reuse shell.

Oysters may just save the planet—and we’re here to enjoy them and help them do their thing.
