Consultant to multiple Federal and International Agencies including Intenrational Olympic Committee and United Nations OHCHR, co-author of Spectrum of Sex, and Presenter on those topics to audiences worldwide. DESCRIPTION: Institutional policies and practices on sex/gender, particularly the inclusion of “gender identity” as a form of sex/gender, have changed radically during the 21st century. However, as this presentation will examine, practices and policies on the inclusion of intersex people/status as a form of sex/gender have not. This presentation will examine perspectives and lived experiences of people born outside the male/female sex/gender binary and what they tell us about the diversity and scope of sex/gender, gender role, gender expression, and, most specifically, gender identity. In addition, I will explore why, despite a growing trend towards opposing marginalization on the basis of sex or gender, institutions and society at large have been slow to embrace and include intersex experience and people as equal to all others.

GENDER FRONTIERS II: CLINICAL APPROACHES FOR SUPPORTING INDIVIDUALS AT THE INTERSECTION OF GENDER DIVERSITY AND AUTISM OR BROADER NEURODIVERGENCE

PRESENTER: JOHN STRANG, PsyD, is a pediatric neuropsychologist at Children's National Hospital and the director of the Gender and Autism Program, an interdisciplinary clinical program for gender-diverse neurodivergent youth. Dr. Strang is the director of Research for the Children's National Gender Development Program and an associate professor of Neurology, Pediatrics, and Psychiatry at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. He is also faculty with the Global Education Institute for the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH).

DESCRIPTION: Most therapists receive very little training regarding therapeutic work with transgender and nonbinary clients, and what they do receive often focuses on the “101” (definitions and terms). The purpose of this session is to go beyond learning community-oriented language and to incorporate evidence-based practices into therapeutic work with transgender and nonbinary clients. We will cover concepts that relate to the minority stress framework—both the science behind this model and also limitations of the model. We will also discuss interventions that focus on incorporating minority stress psychoeducation tools into therapeutic work, how to intervene related to internalized stigma, and improving coping mechanisms through psychotherapy interventions
