Story
The GES Coalition and its' Community Land Trust, Tierra Colectiva is currently fundraising to save our a neighborhood commercial property! Other businesses in this historic area (grocery store, churches, pharmacies, restaurants & more were either demolished or taken through imminent domain due to highway expansion or private development. The property we are acquiring to save forever for neighborhood use is found in the heart of our neighborhoods, the Historic Cianco's restaurant has served our neighborhood for more than 100 years. Most recently as a liquor store for the past 47 years by the Valdez family. The current owner would like to sell the property to the neighbors through our community land trust. The property also has an attached home where we can preserve affordable housing without displacing neighbors. In summary, we can maintain affordable housing for neighbors as well as save a commercial space that can continue to serve our neighbors, with a new use, in perpetuity (forever)!
The Globeville, Elyria-Swansea Coalition Organizing for Health and Housing Justice is a group of neighborhood leaders and community organizations working to align community health and the well-being of our neighbors through advocacy campaigns to prevent displacement of our neighbors, activate resident-driven leadership, protect historically marginalized neighborhoods, preserve affordability in housing, and promote a culture that welcomes neighbors who value our long-standing culture, interconnectedness, and commitment to equity.
Our organizing is community-driven and based on a shared commitment to economic, racial, and environmental justice.
GES Coalition was formed by neighbors, advocates and community organizations in 2015 around a vision of health and housing justice.
Since 2016, GES Coalition has organized with a cooperative leadership structure composed entirely of neighbors in Globeville and Elyria-Swansea, and who form the collective leadership roles that drive and uphold GES Coalition's collective vision and ground rules, strategic planning, policy and advocacy, community organizing, membership and neighborhood activities.
GES Coalition is fiscally sponsored by Project VOYCE.
