Anna Short's Story

Hello Friends! Thanks for visiting my page--I'm really glad you're here. You're probably wondering, "what's this all about?" Well, it's about doing something that's good for me AND good for this wonderful place I call home.

The Inland Bays are an important part of everyday life here in Sussex County. Not only do they support local industries like fishing and tourism, but they're also home to hundreds of species of fish and wildlife that rely on their waters to reproduce and find food. Protecting these special places is essential, which is why I've joined the campaign to Get Out for the Bays!

At the end of September, I'll be embarking on a 62-mile bike ride around the Inland Bays to raise money for the Center's work to protect and restore them. Throughout the month, I'll be training for the ride and asking folks to support my efforts by donating to the campaign. I hope you'll join my journey and help me reach my fundraising goal!

My Ride

She's an early 90s Schwinn (so I've been told) and I call her Mrs. Peacock. She was given to me when I was 16 years old and has carried me many miles since. From college campuses and summertime commutes to embarrassing wipeouts and traffic accidents (WEAR YOUR HELMET!), Mrs. P has been quite the trooper and I have every confidence that we'll get through this journey with no troubles. Ain't she something?

My Route
It's pretty simple. I'm going to bike 62 miles around in the Inland Bays in a single day. Starting from my home in Rehoboth Beach, I'll head south on Coastal Highway until I hit Fenwick. Then I'll head west and make my way around and back to Rehoboth, where I'll celebrate my finish with a beer and some oysters at Henlopen City Oyster House, one of the Center's Don't Chuck Your Shucks partners. Weather-permitting, I'll hit the road on Saturday, September 26th. Rain date is September 27th!

What You Can Do
I can pedal and pedal all day long, but I need your help to succeed. I'm challenging myself to take this ride because the Inland Bays are important to me and to the future of our coastal communities. I really hope you that you'll support the Center's work to protect and restore them by donating to the Get Out campaign! You can:

  • Donate any amount per mile (62 miles total)
  • Donate any amount per bug I swallow (I'm not kidding. I have friends who have committed to this. So far, the count is 3 and rising.)
  • Donate in any way you please!

However you choose, you are wonderful and I'm so appreciative of your support. Let's do this!
