In 2019, Dmytro volunteered for Ukraine’s Air Assault Forces, knowing it meant serving where the danger was greatest. When the full-scale invasion began, he was already on the front lines defending his country. On March 7, 2022, a devastating mine blast left him with lower paraplegia. In a single moment, he lost sensation from his legs to his abdomen. His life changed forever.

What followed was a brutal fight for survival — intensive care, long months of rehabilitation in Ukraine and Latvia, and learning how to rebuild his life from a wheelchair. Instead of giving up, Dmytro chose to fight again — this time for his recovery.

He discovered adaptive sports, regained strength and purpose, and even returned to military service in Bucha in 2025, helping train and inspire other wounded veterans. His wife became his constant source of strength on this new battlefield.

In February 2026, he represented Ukraine at the Wounded Warrior Trials at Camp Pendleton, winning 2 gold medals in swimming and 3 silver medals in wheelchair rugby and indoor rowing.

His spirit is unstoppable.

But he still cannot stand or walk.
