More than 700 birthing people die each year in the United States and 2/3 of those deaths are preventable.

Expectant teens and families facing financial insecurity are far less likely to have access to the prenatal and postpartum care, education, and support they may need due to high costs and other associated barriers. Established in 2020, Omaha Better Birth Project seeks to break down these barriers so ALL families can access the care they may need to have an safe, informed, and empowered birth experience.

Omaha Better Birth Project was founded by Samantha Wall, MPH. Samantha is a local Omaha mother, scientist, and passionate maternal health advocate. Her first daughter’s birth led her down the path to birth advocacy through work with the International Cesarean Awareness Network (ICAN). The inequity of access to doulas, childbirth education, and support was highlighted by her own family’s struggle to afford these vital services. Since beginning birth advocacy work in 2014, Samantha has met countless families facing the same barriers, and so Omaha Better Birth Project was born. Her drive to help families achieve supported, respectful, and empowered birth experiences continues to grow each and every day.

In 2024, Omaha Better Birth Project will be launching two brand new programs designed to further decrease maternal mortality in the pregnancy and postpartum space.

These programs are not just initiatives; they are the embodiment of our commitment to creating positive change.

Here's a Glimpse of What Your Donation Can Do

Prevent Postpartum Depression: We are excited to bring the ROSE program to Omaha. The ROSE Program (Reach Out, Stay Strong, Essentials for mothers of newborns) is an evidence-based program that has been shown to reduce cases of postpartum depression by half among low-income women in a series of randomized control trials.

Provide Essential Postpartum Care: We will also begin issuing grants for families to pay for postpartum doula care. Postpartum doulas play a crucial role in providing physical, emotional, and informational support to new parents during the postpartum period. Despite being seen as a leisure, postpartum doulas provide invaluable support during a period of significant change, helping parents feel more confident, informed, and nurtured as they navigate the early days and weeks of parenthood.
