What Literacy Gives

In times of uncertainty for many, we still find much to be thankful for. This season invites us to reflect on the traditions we cherish, the stories we share, and the opportunities that have shaped our journeys. For one remarkable learner in our community, Heidi (Qiao Ying) Gao, the journey began in China and carried her across continents, faced with new challenges, new language, and new dreams. She arrived here, in her chosen hometown, with determination, hope, and a belief that a better future was possible for herself and her family. She also arrived knowing that learning English would be the key to unlocking that future. Here is Heidi’s story, in her own voice.

My name is Hero.
Today I feel like a spring seed taking wing pushing through darkness, greeting the sun’s first glow.

Sometimes I am a river, wild and free, carving out my way.
Sometimes I am the rain, soft and clear, washing my tears away.

But always I am a tree, proud and true,
My roots run deep in soil rich and strong.

Though winds may shake these branches through and through,
But my trunk stands firm, where I belong.

I ask the world, as seasons come and go: “When will every heart find its wings?”
And the answer is – if every heart dares to begin,
Like a spring seed.
