We're happy to announce - The "Ekphrastic Poetry" BIPOC Workshop Series!

This type of poetry vividly describes a work of art, such as a painting, sculpture, or photographs, in your own words - the way it resonates with you, the viewer. It allows and encourages you to put words to how you feel based on what you see and express yourself freely. We use these visual items as our writing "prompts"
In our monthly workshops, each artist we highlight will be black, indigenous or a person of color.

Join us on Tuesday, May 27th!

Feel free to bring your favorite snack, whatever you like to write with and be ready for a relaxing environment.
As always these virtual workshops are completely free, for every era Veteran or Service Member who identifies as black, indigenous or a person of color are welcome to attend. No prior writing experience is required! We're excited to be back in our safe space of supportive community and creativity! See you soon!

This workshop will take place via Zoom on Tuesday, May 27th, 7:30pm-9:30pm ET.

Regardless of experiences with writing, combat, art, deployment, etc, any veteran or service member who identifies as Black, Indigenous, or a person of color is welcome at this workshop. No prior writing experience is required.

Facilitators:

Eddie Falcón has been an activist in the Bay Area since shortly after his separation from the Air Force. He’s had membership in organizations such as About Face (formerly Iraq Veterans Against the War), Before Enlisting, Bay Area Copwatch chapters, Unconventional Action in the Bay, and Warrior Writers. This work has brought him to speak in high schools, colleges, youth programs, and at events across Europe, North America, and the Middle East about his military experience and Anti-War perspective. He has also co-produced the documentary Occupation Has No Future set in Palestine and Israel, many Copwatch videos and Know Your Rights trainings with WeCopwatch, and has co-starred in two bilingual National Lawyers Guild infomercials for Immigrants Rights. He is also a musician and has performed at several events and fundraisers across the nation. He has worked for many years as a high school teacher in Special Education, Math, and Spanish. Eddie likes playing the piano, hiking, cycling, watching the NBA, collecting, playing, and restoring vintage synthesizers, and is involved in California’s Native American community as a dancer, drummer, and event organizer.

Angela Waller is a Pennsylvania native and “grew up” serving in various Army Reserve Medical units throughout the Philadelphia and surrounding areas as a Medical Laboratory Technologist. She’s now a published writer, Holistic Lifestyle Coach, and advanced level Registered Yoga Teacher, with hundreds of additional hours of specialized certifications including two of her favorites; Prenatal Yoga and Trauma Informed Yoga, all while expanding her wellness business serving diverse populations. After two deployments, Angela started practicing yoga again, writing poetry and volunteering which were all instrumental in helping her reduce stress. An avid volunteer of several international and national organizations, she was recognized for distinguished community service which twice earned her the President Barack Obama Volunteer Service Award. In early 2017 Angela founded her grassroots nonprofit organization created to bring the arts and various social events to veterans, older adults and children who otherwise may not have had the opportunity to engage in cultural activities. Angela is an activist, advocate, and philanthropist; she’s also an Ambassador for multiple organizations. Angela’s additional passions include her love for taking road trips, nature walks, world travel, photography, horseback riding and training puppies to eventually become future service dogs for veterans.
