The Black Experience Grand Prairie

In 2024, through the visionary leadership of Mayor Ron Jensen and City Manager Bill Hills, Grand Prairie launched its first-ever Black History Month Program—an initiative that quickly became one of our city's most significant cultural milestones.

What began as an unprecedented commission blossomed into the Grand Prairie Black History Commission—a powerful collective of community leaders, pastors, business owners, and dedicated residents united by a shared mission to celebrate Black excellence throughout our city.

The results exceeded all expectations. Our inaugural celebration featured multiple events spanning the entire month, drawing over 2,500 attendees from across the DFW Metroplex and beyond, establishing Grand Prairie as home to the region's largest Black History celebration.

Under the guidance of Councilwoman Bessye Adams and our committed commission members, we've created spaces for culture, connection, and community that have already become treasured traditions. Now, we're expanding our programming to build on this remarkable foundation and create even more meaningful celebrations of Black history, achievement, and excellence.

Join us in supporting this vibrant community tradition as we continue to grow, inspire, and unite through the power of shared history and collective celebration.
