Grow Bag Gardens
Goal: $15,000

Every family that attends a Bryant & Co. Foundation Cool Bus block party leaves with something growing. That is the promise. Each participant plants their own grow bag at the event and takes it home, but the story does not end there.

Here is how it works. Each family receives one grow bag planted with one specific crop for that season. Not a mix. Not a sampler. One thing, done intentionally. That focus is the point. When you tend one plant from seed to harvest you actually learn something. You understand its water needs, its light preferences, how it grows, when it is ready, and what to do with it when it is. You become the neighborhood expert on that crop for that season.

Then the magic happens. Once a month or as often as neighbors choose, families on residential blocks put their grow bags out by their front doors for a Halloween style harvest swap. You walk the block, you see what everyone else grew, you trade your tomatoes for your neighbor's peppers, you swap your herbs for someone's squash, and you go back inside with a full basket and a new recipe. Apartment dwellers bring their bags to shared courtyards, rooftops, and common spaces to do the same thing.

Everyone grows one thing. Everyone shares everything. The block becomes a distributed farm where every door is a different crop and every neighbor is a farmer.

We run block parties quarterly, one per season, each one tied to what is growing at The Living Ground. Spring bags get spring seeds. Fall bags get fall seeds. Every kit is curated for the season and the community so what families take home actually grows.

How your donation will be used:
Funds go toward bulk purchasing of grow bags and premium container soil, seasonal seed curation with one crop variety per family, printed crop care guides specific to each seed variety in English and Spanish, recipe cards featuring that crop, harvest swap instruction cards explaining how to organize a neighborhood swap, and QR code resource cards linking families to ongoing support through the Bryant & Co. Foundation community network. Grow bag costs are tracked separately from Cool Bus event operating costs so donors know exactly what their contribution covered.

How it will be tracked and reported:
Bags are logged by event, season, community, and crop variety distributed. Donors receive a post-event report after each quarterly block party showing how many bags went out, what was planted, and where. We will document neighborhood harvest swaps as they form and share photos, stories, and recipes with our donor community at the end of each season. Our goal is not just to count bags but to show you what grew, who swapped it, and what got cooked.

Why this matters:
The bus leaves. The bag stays. The neighbors meet. The block eats. And everybody becomes an expert in something.
