Dear Friends,

In November of last year our young not-for-profit organization, A Way Out, The Path to Recovery, hosted a recognition luncheon to honor some of the young people we have served since our inception in 2021. Among our honorees was a group of four young men who had made a pact with one another after entering our program that they would “stick together and push each other”. Their goal was to succeed by earning their place in higher education and finding meaningful employment. Their promise was to support each other to achieve that goal.

During their high school years, tragedy struck when the brother of one of these four friends was shot and killed while travelling in another area of the city where rival gangs resided. The brother of this young man who was struck down in the prime of his life, was enraged and wanted revenge. His friends encouraged him to first speak with their mentor, our program developer Johnny Dorsey before acting on his anger. Mr. Dorsey helped to calm the young man, and explained that the best way to get revenge would be to continue to succeed. He also told the brother of the murdered youth that his mother had already buried one child due to violence, and she should never have to bury another for that same reason. All of these four young men have gone on to either enter college or trade school, and they still continue to keep their promise to “push” one another to succeed.

During the month of March, we are looking to raise funds from those who would like to make a difference for young people like the ones you just read about. We are hoping to raise enough money this month to hire a professional job coach and job developer to assist in offering help with resume writing, interviewing skills, and job placement. We also hope to have this individual develop community contacts with employers willing to hire the young people who have gone through our program.

Author, parish priest and founder of Homeboy Industries, Father Gregory Boyle had their silk screen shop print a tee shirt which reads, “Nothing Stops a Bullet Like a Job.” Would you please help us give these young people a chance to succeed? The first $5,000.00 donated during the month of March will be matched by Louis “Dan” Alverez, founder of our program and CEO of Golden Hill Foods.
