Hash Bash at the Diag

Hash Bash began as an act of rebellion in response to the unjust imprisonment of John Sinclair, a local activist and poet, sentenced to 10 years in prison for distributing just two joints. His case sparked outrage and became a rallying cry for marijuana reform.

That same year, Ann Arbor became a pioneer in cannabis reform by passing a groundbreaking ordinance: a $5 fine for smoking marijuana in public instead of jail time. This forward-thinking law reflected the city’s commitment to decriminalization and cannabis rights. The $5 fine symbolized a new era—one where cannabis use was no longer a criminal act, but a personal freedom. It was a direct challenge to the war on drugs, and became an integral part of Hash Bash’s history and legacy.

Today, Hash Bash stands as the oldest and longest-running cannabis event in the world, continuing to bring together 15,000–30,000 people every year to celebrate cannabis culture, push for progress, and honor that revolutionary spirit. What started as a protest for John Sinclair’s freedom has grown into one of the largest and most influential cannabis gatherings globally. The same energy of activism and defiance that fueled those early days continues to thrive at Hash Bash, now a vibrant celebration of music, education, and activism.

Hash Bash has always been at the forefront of cannabis reform, advocating for legalization, racial justice, and economic opportunity for those affected by the war on drugs. Today, it remains a powerful gathering place where activists, entrepreneurs, and cannabis consumers come together to celebrate the progress we’ve made—and push for even greater change.

Hash Bash isn’t just an event—it’s a 55-year legacy of activism, culture, and community. Join us in celebrating cannabis culture, honoring the past, and pushing the boundaries of progress by supporting Hash Bash through one of our many sponsorship opportunities, signing up to volunteer, or joining in the celebration yourself. Together, we’ll honor the past, empower the present, and inspire the future of cannabis reform activists across the globe.
