Health Access Innovation is a nonprofit that helps patients access healthcare by using AI powered tools to reverse health insurance denials. We gather data and curate evidence to build a case for systemic change. We provide low-barrier support mechanisms for patients facing inappropriate health insurance coverage denials, and build software and AI to scale that work, and thereby alter perverse systemic incentives.

Inappropriate health insurance denials, and other inappropriate and illegal administrative practices of health plans, have dire consequences for peoples’ physical, mental, and financial well being. By all indications, the scale of the problem is massive, and the implications for the people whose lives it touches are devastating and unjust. Patients facing inappropriate coverage denials have recourse available to them, but it is typically difficult, costly, or time intensive. Appeals processes provide a relatively low barrier mechanism for such patients to access coverage. However, appeal utilization is extremely low across the board; in many contexts appeal rates are less than 1%, despite the fact that appeals that are sought lead to overturns at high rates.
