The events of the past few days in Ukraine are shocking and devastating. I grew up in Ukraine and it is absolutely heartbreaking to see my country becoming a full-blown war zone in just one week. My immediate family has reached safety and now I can focus on helping my Ukrainian people.

By now, over 3 million Ukrainians fled their homes, seeking refuge in the neighboring countries. They headed into the uncertainty and not knowing what's next. Many of the families had to separate, since men ages 18-60 are not allowed to leave the country. People had to say goodbye to their loved ones and leave all their belongings and lives behind. A lot of children - unaccompanied. Scared, confused, and under a state of acute stress. Many organizations are providing for their immediate basic need, but emotional well-being is currently an afterthought. Yet, there have been many reports about people arriving to the borders exhausted, traumatized and going through nervous breakdowns.

I am a mental health practitioner based in the United States. For many years I've been working in emergency settings, providing help to refugee unaccompanied children from all over the World. Now I know: the Universe was just preparing me for what is now. I am currently in Poland at the border of Ukraine to provide immediate disaster mental health assistance.

Psychological First Aid (PFA) Initiative consists of the international team of bilingual volunteer clinicians and first responders. We are present and ready to assist directly at the borders and at the emergency shelters. The purpose is to provide critically important emotional support, help Ukrainian refugees emotionally stabilize, spot mental health crisis, and intervene. We will be utilizing RAPID, a unique theoretically grounded and evidence based PFA method, developed by Johns Hopkins University.

Psychological First Aid (PFA) has been proven to mitigate the aftermath of acute stress and trauma, as well as reduce the occurrence of PTSD. Additionally, it provides much needed comfort, offers coping skills, and fosters individual resilience of children and families.

It’s very humbling to experience how much the World cares about us in Ukraine. I’d love to see this sense of unity and an unprecedented support go on beyond the current time and events. Crecí en Ucrania y es absolutamente desgarrador ver a mi país convertirse en una zona de guerra en toda regla en solo una semana. Mi familia inmediata ha alcanzado la seguridad y ahora puedo centrarme en ayudar a mi pueblo ucraniano.

A estas alturas, más de 3 millones de ucranianos huyeron de sus hogares, buscando refugio en los países vecinos. Se dirigieron a la incertidumbre y no sabían qué pasará. Muchas de las familias tuvieron que separarse, ya que a los hombres de 18 a 60 años no se les permite salir del país. La gente tenía que despedirse de sus seres queridos y dejar atrás todas sus pertenencias y vidas. Muchos niños viajan no acompañados, asustados, confundidos y bajo un estado de estrés agudo. Muchas organizaciones satisfacen sus necesidades básicas inmediatas, pero el bienestar emocional es actualmente una ocurrencia tardía. Sin embargo, ha habido muchos informes de personas que llegan a las fronteras agotadas, traumatizadas y que pasan por crisis nerviosas.

Soy la profesional de la salud mental con sede en los Estados Unidos. Durante muchos años he estado trabajando en situaciones de emergencia, proporcionando ayuda a niños refugiados no acompañados de todo el mundo. Ahora lo sé: el Universo me estaba preparando para lo que es ahora. La semana que viene me dirijo a las fronteras de Ucrania y a los países vecinos de Eslovaquia, Polonia y Rumanía para proporcionar asistencia inmediata de salud mental en caso de desastre. Estoy planeando llegar a las fronteras para el 15 de marzo.
La Iniciativa de Primeros Auxilios Psicológicos (PFA) está formada por el equipo internacional de médicos voluntarios bilingües. Estaremos presentes y listos para ayudar directamente en las fronteras y en los refugios de emergencia. El propósito es proporcionar apoyo emocional de importancia crítica, ayudar a los refugiados ucranianos a estabilizarse emocionalmente, detectar crisis de salud mental e intervenir. Estaremos utilizando RAPID, un método único de PFA teóricamente fundamentado y basado en la evidencia, desarrollado por la Universidad Johns Hopkins.

Se ha demostrado que los primeros auxilios psicológicos (PFA) mitigan las secuelas del estrés agudo y el trauma, así como la incidencia del trastorno de estrés postraumático. Además, proporciona una comodidad muy necesaria, ofrece habilidades de afrontamiento y fomenta la resiliencia individual de los niños y las familias.
