Dear Hudson Falls Free Library Supporter,

Our building will soon celebrate its 110th birthday. Construction began in August 1915 with an opening held in February 1916 that brought nearly 500 people through the door. Construction cost $10,500 or almost $340,000 in today’s dollars.

We recently got an unexpected look at the library’s more-than-century-old infrastructure (see below for photos). The basement bathrooms were opened up for a mold abatement that morphed into a much larger—and more expensive—asbestos removal project.

This experience brings into sharper focus how the whole library is in need of review and revitalization.

A year ago, we began surveying patrons for input into a much-needed Strategic Plan, and the resulting five-year vision for the future is set to be completed soon. Developing a framework for sustaining and improving our building is top of the list.

We also want to implement new activities and services as well as invest in more materials and technology. But everything requires a solid, well-maintained building with enough power, internet access and space—things that we currently lack.

We’ll be reaching out to the community further in this endeavor, looking for advice from people with building repair know-how, fundraising finesse and everything in between. We already have a fledgling Friends Group just taking flight. Come meet some of the members at the upcoming Book Sale on Dec. 5 and 6 where they will also have raffle baskets and a bake sale. If you miss that, they currently meet the first Tuesday of each month at 2:00 p.m.

In this time of thanks and reflection, we ask that you consider supporting the library in any way you can. It’s been a time of unexpected expenses but we can now look forward to growth and opportunity in the coming year.
