Meet Maya: Turning Pain into Purpose Through Peer Support

Maya was a 15-year-old carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders. She struggled daily with the pressures of school, toxic relationships, and the impact of a traumatic childhood that no one knew about. Her smile, once bright, had become rare, and her family worried as she withdrew further into herself.

That all began to change when she joined Peer Solutions through her school. Surrounded by peers who were also struggling and a team that understood her, Maya found something she hadn’t felt in years: a safe space. Through our free Trauma-Informed Primary Prevention (TIPP) program, she learned about healthy coping skills, identified supportive relationships, and developed the confidence to speak up against bullying and harassment. Maya found herself opening up about her struggles and seeing them in a new light, and she began to feel empowered to make changes not only in her life but in her community.

As Maya grew with the program, she started helping other students who were in difficult situations, becoming a trusted voice in her school. What once was her pain transformed into her purpose. She joined Peer Solutions as a peer leader, advocating for respect, safety, and equity. Today, Maya leads workshops on preventing relationship violence, healthy coping skills, and advocacy, helping younger students find their own voices just as she found hers.

Community Impact: HonorHealth Foundation

I am sending a sincere, "Thank You" to Dr. David Cho at HonorHealth for the thorough and compassionate care he has provided for my mother as her oncologist the past 5 years. My mother was found to have an incidental lung cancer in May 2018 and my father suddenly and tragically passed away June 3, 2018 from natural causes. My poor mother had to bury her husband and quickly gear-up for the fight of her life, losing a lung, and recovering from cancer. Dr. Cho helped see her through the lowest days of her life. He was so kind and patient, explaining everything to her in understandable terms. He gave her his opinion as to her course of care, yet respected her choices. She has had a remarkable recovery and is nearing her 5th year "cancer free!" We will be forever grateful to HonorHealth for giving her strength and hope in a loving manner.
