There are a lot of words that people use when they describe the impact HavenHouse St. Louis has on them as patients, families, and caregivers. Words like hope, healing, and comfort come up all the time. However, this year, I heard a new way to describe what HavenHouse means to guests:

“Balm for the wounded soul.”

That was a phrase used by a guest named Mandy, who traveled all the way from Ireland for a procedure that was only available in St. Louis. Her journey was challenging, and receiving treatment in St. Louis was a matter of life and death.

Her experience at HavenHouse made a terrible situation one that she could manage. She found HavenHouse to be a “safe, kind, caring environment, far away from home, that is balm for the wounded soul, never mind a body riddled with infections.”

Those stories were repeated throughout the year, with some guests coming from far away and others coming from our home state. A guest from Caledonia, Missouri traveled to St. Louis to be with his daughter, who was receiving treatment at Barnes-Jewish. He told us, “The comfort and support offered by HavenHouse made an already challenging situation more manageable, allowing me to focus on my daughter full-time. I applaud the staff at HavenHouse for their heartfelt support from the very first contact, throughout my stay, and upon departure. Your flexibility is so kind and generous. ‘Thank you’ seems so short in comparison to your assistance. I will forever be grateful for you. Your work is crucial and vital. What a tremendous blessing you are.”

Whether they are crossing an ocean or coming from our own state, guests come to HavenHouse and find a common feeling: hope.
