About This Workshop

The Higüera Workshop is a hands-on cultural experience led by master artist Joel Cruz of Hikotea Arts, traveling from Borikén to share the traditional practice of Taíno carving and symbolism.

The Higüera (gourd) has long been used across Caribbean Indigenous cultures as both a practical object and a canvas for storytelling, memory, and spiritual expression.

In this workshop, participants will not only learn how to carve a Higüera, but also explore the deeper meaning behind Taíno symbols, their connection to nature, and the creation stories that continue to carry cultural knowledge forward.

This is an intimate, interactive experience designed to honor tradition, creativity, and community learning.
