SFC (Ret) Jeffrey D. Mallory, callsign “Hee Haw,” proudly served with the 160th SOAR from 1987–1992 and again from 1993–1997. Today, Jeff continues to embody the Night Stalker spirit through challenges that test endurance, resilience, and commitment.

Jeff first became aware of the Hoka Hey Motorcycle Challenge in the summer of 2022 after seeing a social media post requesting prayers for a participant. Intrigued by the challenge and its purpose, he began researching the history and significance behind the event.

The Hoka Hey Motorcycle Challenge originated from the vision of Jim Red Cloud, whose dream centered around 1,000 combat-hardened warriors mounted on 1,000 battle-ready horses. “Hoka Hey,” known as the battle cry of Crazy Horse, translates to, “It’s a good day to die.”

The inaugural Hoka Hey Motorcycle Challenge took place in 2010, running from Key West, Florida, to Homer, Alaska. The first several years were conducted as races with substantial cash prizes awarded to winners. Beginning in 2014, the event shifted its focus from competition to charitable giving, becoming a ride centered on service and fundraising.

The challenge itself demands significant physical and mental endurance. Riders must use American-made motorcycles, sleep alongside their motorcycles during the event, and navigate without GPS devices, relying solely on handheld maps and organizer-provided directions.

Following a rigorous selection and interview process, Jeff was selected to participate in the 2024 Hoka Hey Motorcycle Challenge—an honor reserved for riders willing to embrace the demands of the journey. The challenge officially began on August 4, 2024, in Daytona Beach, Florida, before routing participants south to Key West and then following the original route north to Homer, Alaska. Riders faced immediate adversity as Hurricane Debby impacted Florida on the opening day of the event.

Since transitioning into a charity-focused ride, Hoka Hey has directed proceeds from entry fees toward supporting Indigenous communities across the country. Riders are also encouraged to raise funds for causes meaningful to them. Jeff selected the Night Stalker Association as his charity of choice, recognizing the organization’s longstanding commitment to supporting Night Stalkers and their families.

For Jeff, Hoka Hey represented more than a motorcycle challenge—it became a personal vision quest. Nearly 10,000 miles traveled over 16 days offered time for reflection on a 20-year military career and on the honor of serving among the few chosen to be Night Stalkers. His participation reflects the perseverance, commitment, and quiet professionalism that define our community.
