HOPE is a compassionate organization that has been providing support and solace for individuals navigating the challenging journey of grief for the past 45 years.

In 1978, Therese Schoeneck’s daughter, Mary, died in a car accident. At the time, Central New York did not have a support group available for parents dealing with the death of a child. Determined that something positive would come from Mary’s death, she formed the first support group – Coping with the Holidays, in December 1978.

Since then, HOPE has provided hundreds of thousands of people with grief support during their most difficult times. We believe that by addressing trauma surrounding grief, we can prevent its escalation into more significant mental health challenges later on.

HOPE is genuinely dedicated to easing the burden of those who have experienced loss and believe that financial barriers should be removed during times of grief. With a modest team of 11 dedicated employees (10 part time; 1 full time) and hundreds of volunteers, we are CNY’s leading grief experts.
