Helping People with I/DD Cope with Grief
Thursday, September 19th, 9:30 AM – 11:30 AM EDT
In Person
Overview: People with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities may process things differently. Because of this, grief can be an especially challenging topic. In this workshop we cover grief basics, how people with I/DD may respond to grief, and how to support them in their grief journey. Ideal for: professional staff working in congregate care / residential settings, schools, nonprofit agencies, faith communities, and families who interact with people with I/DD experiencing grief. Participants will learn: the elements of grief; how to recognize and become sensitive to the issues of grief; ways to respond to grief, including what to say and what not to say to a grieving person; how people with I/DD understand and respond to grief; suggestions to help individuals and their families cope with grief; availability of additional resources.
