Howie’s Place: In Memory of Big Poppy

In December of 2018, Morgan's grandfather, known as Big Poppy—was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. After the initial shock of his diagnosis, Morgan focused on keeping him mentally stimulated and engaged, following doctors’ advice to maintain familiar daily activities. One of his favorite pastimes was playing word games on the computer, something he did every day to “keep his mind sharp.”

As time went on, however, it became more difficult for Big Poppy to enjoy these games. Many were filled with pop-ups, required constant restarts, or became too challenging too quickly—making it frustrating for someone experiencing cognitive changes.

When Big Poppy passed away in September of 2023, Morgan wanted to honor his memory in a meaningful way. Reflecting on the joy those games once brought him, she was inspired to create Howie’s Place—a space designed to bring that same sense of enjoyment and mental stimulation to others facing dementia.

Howiesplace.org is a free, easy-to-use website that offers accessible word and math games tailored to different ability levels. The games can be played on a computer, iPad, or phone, and they never increase in difficulty unless the user chooses to change the setting. Each game can be repeated endlessly, providing comfort, familiarity, and a sense of accomplishment.

Howie’s Place stands as a loving tribute to Big Poppy and to all those who face the challenges of dementia with strength and heart. It is a place where memory, joy, and connection continue to thrive.
