Hydroponics for Youth!
Austin17House Proposal for Acquiring a Flex Farm
Empowering youth to lead the fight against local food insecurity through sustainable agriculture and entrepreneurship.
The Reality & Our Action
The Problem: Access to fresh, affordable produce is a barrier for many of our families, impacting student health and focus.
The Opportunity Gap: Many young people today lack a “training ground” to practice real-world responsibility. This initiative provides an essential low-stakes, high-support environment.
Our Direct Impact: We will produce fresh greens year-round to support 200+ meals per week at A17H, provide take-home harvests for families, and sell overflow.
Skills-Based Curriculum
Growing Operations: Youth take full ownership of the hydroponic systems through hands-on work involving tech-driven nutrient management and crop rotation.
Business: The farm operates as a micro-business. Students manage inventory, track growth cycles, and handle distribution.
Leadership: We move youth from being passive recipients of aid to active producers. They aren't just learning a hobby; they are providing a critical service for their peers and families.
Why it Works
Sustainable: This is a recurring, year-round food source.
Educational: It turns a community need into a classroom for STEM and entrepreneurial skills.
The Long Game: By placing youth in charge of the supply chain, we ensure the project’s longevity.
Costs
Flex Farm System: $4,995
12-Month Supply Box (seeds, nutrients, etc.): First year donated by Fork Farms - value of $449.95
