Ignite Nite is a celebration of Charlotte’s creative community, inviting artists, community members, and art lovers to come together for a citywide evening to spark creativity. This hybrid in-person and virtual event fuses 20 local artists with groups of 10-12 art lovers to create works of art together as part of a Citywide Art Lab.
Each group will receive the same materials to create something truly unique from the artist’s vision. Depending on the selection of the materials, one group may build mini sculptures while another may create a collage or painting. There are three options to participate: in-person at McColl Center, hosted at a group Champion’s home, or at any location virtually. The program will be live-streamed and will include an opportunity to join McColl Center’s Igniters community by donating to the Ignite Momentum campaign. Don't have a group Champion? No worries! We have open groups available!

About McColl Center
McColl Center for Art + Innovation champions contemporary artists and sparks creative experiences for positive community impact. McColl Center advances our mission through Artist Residencies, Exhibitions, Community Engagement, and Education. We envision a community where contemporary artists and an engaged public enhance their creative capacity through relevant, diverse, and accessible experiences.
McColl Center is a nationally recognized artist residency and contemporary art space in Charlotte, NC. Since 1999 we have provided over 420 artists with the time, space, financial support, and opportunities to explore ideas, build community, and grow their practices. We also invite the public to connect with artists through studio visits, exhibitions, public programs, artist-led workshops, and special events.
In addition to the use of studios and equipment in our shared-use spaces and access to 5,000 square feet of exhibition space; McColl Center Artists-in-Residence receive a generous stipend, private housing, curatorial guidance, marketing support, and local transportation. The program is open to local, national, and international artists working in a myriad of creative practices. Each application review panel is comprised of curators, alumni artists, national artists, and arts leaders.
While the residency program is central to our mission, being a resource for local artists is equally important to our core values. In 2020 we launched SPARK, a multi-faceted strategic plan that focuses on meeting artists, and our community, where they are, and a commitment to being an accessible home to artists at all points in their careers. Through SPARK, we renovated two studios to create nine smaller studios that are available for subsidized rent by local artists. We have also developed a Co-op; a coworking model where artists can access the equipment in our labs while building community among and collaborating with their creative colleagues. All too often, space and equipment are a barrier to artistic success; we are committed to working on reducing those barriers for artists.
