Sustaining the Community-Built Path to Dignity

The extraordinary story of Haywood Pathways Center began with a problem our community could no longer ignore. Years ago, the Haywood County Sheriff watched people walk out of the old jail, often with nowhere to go, and cross the street to sit on the cold concrete. These folks were simply people without a place.

That image remained in his mind and in our community's consciousness. It sparked a question we could no longer keep asking: “Where can people go when they have no one and no home?”

In 2014, something extraordinary happened. Churches, leaders, volunteers, and neighbors—representing the entire community—came together to transform the unused jail into a place of refuge. The effort was driven by three founding agencies—Haywood Christian Emergency Shelter, Next Step Ministries, and The Open Door—and solidified when the community WON the $50,000 Ty Pennington Challenge prize that launched the renovation.

The center opened its doors on November 15, 2014. For over a decade, Pathways has stood as a testament to what Haywood County can do when we decide we won’t look away.

Pathways Is Haywood County

Pathways isn’t just a building. The community is built on the guiding principle:

"Guided by faith, love, and respect, we provide food, shelter, and individualized supportive services for Haywood County Residents."

We are the volunteers giving their hands. The businesses giving their heart. The donors believing no one should walk alone. And the impact of that collective belief is undeniable, as shown by our 2024 results:

Shelter & Stability: We provided 21,303 Nights of Shelter to 295 unique individuals.
Pathways to Housing: 64% of individuals and 75% of families successfully exited our programs to housing or family reunification.
Economic Opportunity: 72% of individuals achieved stable monthly income, while 60% of individuals gained employment.
Nourishment & Outreach: We served 92,847 total meals in 2024, with our Holy Cow Food Truck contributing 20,137 meals to hungry neighbors across the county.

Sustaining the Momentum: The Need for Monthly Stability

Pathways was built by this community, and it is sustained by this community. We operate on a $1 million annual budget, supported entirely by you, our neighbors, as we accept no government funding for our core social services.

The stability created by years of community support has allowed us to achieve these remarkable results. However, without stable, monthly financial support from our entire community, the years of momentum, dignity, and success we've built could unravel.

The solution is predictable, reliable revenue. Individual monthly donors and monthly business/corporation sponsors provide the steady foundation needed to guarantee that every bed, every meal, and every supportive service remains available for the next person who needs a lifeline.
