We may have told you that we have become volunteers for Haven’s Harvest. (After all, we tell everyone about it since I enjoy this “work” so much.) Just in case, it is a story we love repeating.
Haven’s Harvest coordinates about 350 volunteers to pick up and re-distribute food from restaurants, universities, grocery stores, bakeries, and other resources. The volunteers are then directed to drop off the food at senior housing, community centers, transitional housing and shelters, and streets where neighbors can share the provisions.
We're talking about fresh fruit and vegetables, trays of cooked rice and roasted chicken, salad kits, cookies and cakes, fresh bread, bagels, rolls, and much more. This food is donated while still fresh and is being replaced on the shelves and suppliers’ refrigerators.
Additionally, we are keeping the food from being thrown in a dumpster. This is good for the planet and creates a healthy food insecurity solution.
PS If you want to come for “A Rescue” you can join us for the trip. Each run usually takes about an hour, and you will get to meet some wonderful people at the start and finish of the rescue.
