Scott Friedman's Story
Haven’s Harvest rescues food that might otherwise go bad/be wasted, and delivers the right food, at the right time, to the right place. This means a New Haven Afterschool program gets healthy snacks, a church serving dinner gets trays of prepared foods, ready to heat up, and a soup kitchen gets raw vegetables to make tomorrow’s lunch! I delivered a subaru outback full of produce from Yale Hospitality to the Beth-El Center and the chef said “We’re making frittatas!” I knew the overall statistics (400 New Haven County volunteers rescued over 1.5 MILLION pounds of food last year and it looks likely we’ll break that this year) but I had never looked at my own impact. Last year, I did 50 rescues, saving 2 TONS of food, serving over 3,000 meals, all from food that might otherwise go to waste. That serves my neighbors in need, helps our community’s public health, and is environmentally friendly too! I am so proud of this organization, and all that we have done, that I am helping raise funds!
