Free, but you must RSVP!!! Despite the needs, only one in three Black adults with mental illness receive treatment. According to the American Psychiatric Association's Mental Health Facts for African Americans guide, they are also: Less likely to receive guideline-consistent care. The fact is that depression is one of the most common mental illnesses but an underrecognized and undertreated problem among African American men. Common beliefs about mental health within the African American community include the following: Being depressed is just normal, and talking about it is weak. Join us to address these issues put upon our communities!!! Yes, we said put upon us. June 30th to discuss and learn more. The root of mental health stigma among Black people can be traced back to slavery. At that time, it was commonly thought enslaved people were not sophisticated enough to develop depression, anxiety, or other mental health disorders. We must address these factors & create a pipeline of resources to assist our communities.
