Habitat for Humanity of Montezuma County helps local residents attain affordable home ownership. We are building a small starter home for a single mother and her young daughter. Habitat for Humanity needs help funding completion of the project.

We Involve the Whole Community: Our home builds and repair program support the local community, work with the local community college building trades program to give students hands-on experience, and provide volunteer opportunities for community members. We use local vendors and contractors to keep funds in the community and help businesses stay stable and even grow.

Our Program Builds Responsible Citizens: We help responsible, community-grounded families move from federal or state subsidized housing into their own affordable homes. Our current approved new homeowner has a good permanent job and is excited to move out of subsidized housing.

Mortgage payments are affordable. In addition, the new homeowners take a series of home-buying and financial courses that help them avoid financial pitfalls. They also put in 200 hours of "sweat equity" helping build their own and other homes, or work with current homeowners in our A Brush with Kindness home repair program. A Brush with Kindness helps veterans, disabled, senior citizens and low income homeowners stay in their homes.

Creating Permanence: Our new homeowner, Taylor, says, "Owning my own home means a stable way of living for both my daughter and I. It's a way of providing a forever home for the most important person in my life and that's (my daughter). Seeing her happy and excited foir something she can call home brings tremendous joy into my life."

Why We Need Your Help: The campaign asks for donations to help us finish construction (plumbing, electrical, indoor paneling and outdoor paneling, roofing, HVAC), and to purchase appliances and furniture.

Montezuma County is a small rural county of about 26,000 in Southwest Colorado. Government figures suggest it takes about $38/hour, or almost $80,000/year, to live the traditional American middle class life in Montezuma County. But more than 15% of the population live in poverty, and a larger segment live just above the poverty line.

Habitat for Humanity of Montezuma County helps those in the segment just above the poverty line move into their own homes, which also adds stability for jobs, schools and community development.
